Plant and Soil Climate Solutions

Updated: Feb 14

Scientists from around the world study different possible solutions to climate change that use natural plant and soil processes. You will explore a few of these solutions already in use today.

The information about these solutions comes from a non-profit called Project Drawdown and from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which is a U.S. government agency that provides environmental oversight.

Look at the solutions. You will need to select one to model how it works to take CO2 out of the atmosphere.

  1. Make a copy of the handout and information cards, or get them from your teacher.

  2. Read the solution you chose. As you read, focus on how the solution affects the way plants take in or give off CO2, plants transfer carbon to soil, and soil gives off CO2.

  3. Using the handout, create a model to explain:

    1. how plant processes change carbon.

    2. how soil processes change carbon.

    3. how the solution balances out carbon and/or stores it.
