Plant and Soil Information Cards

Updated: Feb 27

We know from our carbon model and our investigations that 121 GtC are taken in by plants during photosynthesis. 60 GtC are put back into the air through plant cellular respiration. We also figured out that 10 GtC from the products of photosynthesis are stored as biomass in the plant. That leaves us with 51 GtC that are unaccounted for (121 GtC - 60 GtC - 10 GtC = 51 GtC).

  1. Make a copy of the handout or get one from your teacher.

  2. Read one of 4 cards about plant and soil relationships to help us figure out what happens to the additional 51 GtC per year.

  3. Gather with a group who read different cards. Share what you read. Focus on where you think the 51 GtC/year is going. Make sure you can point to evidence from your card.

  4. Be prepared to share what you learned with the rest of the class.
