Plant and Soil Model

Updated: Mar 11

We have agreed on ideas about the relationship between plants, carbon, and soil. Now, you will create a model to explain how plants transfer carbon between their leaves, the air, and the soil.

  1. Make a copy of the handout or get one from your teacher.

  2. With a partner or a small group, make a quick sketch of a plant with roots and soil.

  3. Work together to add arrows representing photosynthesis and plant respiration.

  4. Add arrows to track the path carbon takes to build plant biomass and to be transferred to the soil through roots and leaf litter.

  5. Keep this handout because you will add new ideas to it later.
