We have agreed on ideas about the relationship between plants, carbon, and soil. Now, you will create a model to explain how plants transfer carbon between their leaves, the air, and the soil.

- Make a copy of the handout or get one from your teacher.
- With a partner or a small group, make a quick sketch of a plant with roots and soil.
- Work together to add arrows representing photosynthesis and plant respiration.
- Add arrows to track the path carbon takes to build plant biomass and to be transferred to the soil through roots and leaf litter.
- Keep this handout because you will add new ideas to it later.
