How does carbon move between plants and soil?

Updated: Feb 20

We can gather more information about the relationship between soil and carbon by watching an animation that zooms in more closely to what is happening when the two interact.

Watch the animation twice. The first time you watch it, pay attention to what is involved in the cycling of carbon. The second time you watch it, pay attention to how the carbon is released.

Discuss with your group or class:

  • What did you notice is involved in the cycling of carbon out of the soil?

  • What did you notice about how carbon is released?

  • How does this animation help you answer the question: How is carbon released from the soil?
