View a lab to investigate how carbon is released from the soil and what could be giving off the carbon. The question we are investigating is: How is carbon released from the soil?
As you view the video of the lab investigation, record your observations and findings on the handout.
- Make a copy of the handout or get one from your teacher. 
- Read the procedures for Part 1. Ask questions about the procedures. 
- Complete Part 1 of the investigation. Pay attention to the right column of your handout. This is where you will write your results. 
- Discuss the final results with your group. 
- Discuss the Part 1 questions with your group. Record your group’s ideas. 
- Be prepared to discuss results and your answers to the questions with the class. 
- Repeat steps 1 through 6 for Part 2 of the investigation.
